Tower Bridge, London

We are doing an around the world theme for our Summer VPK class. So far we've done the USA, Mexico, and Kenya. Next week, we will study England.

For England we are counting sugar cubes into numbered tea cups, learning to tell time (basic), making a flag, reading Madeline and Paddington, making Sun tea and English trifle, and exploring royalty (crowns), knight's shields, fairy puppets (with the children's faces and coffee filter water colored bodies on a tongue depressor).

We had an English Tea Party with mint tea, cream, sugar, little sandwiches and teacakes. We also played London Bridge is Falling Down. The kids really enjoyed it.

Nursery Rhyme:

London Bridge

London bridge is falling down,
Falling down, falling down
London Bridge is falling down
My fair lady
Build it up with sticks and stones
Stick and stones, sticks and stones
Build it up with sticks and stones
My fair lady.

Colour in the flag and the learn its name - the Union Jack.

Show the children where Britian is situated on a map or the globe.

Tell the children about the royal family and see if you can find pictures of them online. Show them the wedding pictures of Prince William and Kate.

Find pictures online of the famous landmarks of London that you have read about in the various picture books and then cut them out and make a poster collage. e.g. Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul's Cathedral etc.

English nursery rhymes

Hi Pam

You have some great ideas. You could also teach the children some nursery rhymes, particularly London Bridge and Pussy Cat, also Old King Cole as these deal with London and kings and queens.
