Paper Plane Math Activity

A fun paper plane math activity to re-inforce the concept of measurement and distance.

This activity is a great example of using concrete experiences to help children learn the language and concepts of mathematics.

Maths has been said to be a language which we use to describe the world we live in, a language that children must understand in order to do well in this subject in later years.

Preschool math activities should encourage little ones to discover numeric concepts through their senses, by exploring the concrete world, through constant experience, through practice and by repetition of learning activities.

This paper plane activity is a game that they could continue playing on their own at other times too.

Paper Plane Math Activity

Paper
Units of measure e.g. footsteps, ruler, bottle, rolled up newspaper


Activity

1. Make paper planes together. (Instructions below). You could decorate them with shapes or stickers beforehand.

2. Stand on a set point and have competitions to see which plan flies the furthest.
   

3. Use the different units of measure to count how many measures away each plane lands.
   

4. Decide which unit is best.

Decorate the planes by printing them with geometric shapes - squares, circles, rectangles etc. BEFORE you fold the paper to make the planes.
